DECEMBER - Beni Otome - Sesame Shochu
Bar Moga’s Coco’s Spirit - the weekly educational happy hour hosted every Wednesday from 5 - 8 p.m. by spirits expert Coco Seo - will continue throughout the month of December featuring Beni Otome, a sesame shochu.
The only liqueur in the world distilled from sesame seeds, this rare shochu is produced in Fukuoka, using 60% barley, 30% rice, and 10% sesame, making for a unique drinking experience. Beni Otome was created in the 1960s by a woman who took over her husband’s sake brewery business when he passed away. She wanted to create an aromatic liqueur that would be comparable to the Western spirits that were being imported to Japan at the time, and she knew that adding sesame to a spirit would enhance its fragrance. And with that, Beni Otome was created.
During Coco’s Spirit, Beni Otome cocktails can be enjoyed either neat, on the rocks, as a highball, and Oyuwari style (warm, with water), for just $7 a glass.
Each month, Coco and Bar Moga showcase a new Japanese spirit (whisky, shochu, gin, etc.).
The “Coco’s Spirit” series is led by Kayoko “Coco” Seo, a trained jazz musician and Japanese beverage expert who refined her knowledge of Japanese spirits under the tutelage of the prolific Shingo Gokan of Angel’s Share. The epitome of a true moga, or “modern woman,” Coco is a certified shochu advisor and respected industry expert. She is thrilled to share her extensive spirits knowledge and tasting + pairing tips with guests in a casual, interactive setting.
